Cotto had a 98-71 edge in jabs landed, hitting on 34% and surpringly outboxed Mosley in early rounds. Mosley landed 53% of his power shots (177 of 335) to 150 of 387 (39%) for Cotto, who spent the last three rounds effectively counterpunching. Scoring: 115-113 C 2x & 116-113 C.)
6/9/07 KO 11 ZAB JUDAH (wore down Judah, outlanding Zab 90-24 in power over last four rounds. Overall, Cotto landed 292 of 683 total punches (43%-68 thrown per round) to 132 of 459 (29%-46 thrown per round) for Judah. Cotto also landed 44% of his power shots, landing 54% in rounds eight thru ten. Judah landed 57% of his power shots, but didn’t throw enough, landing nine per round and throwing 16 per round. Cotto also avg’d 20 jabs thrown per round, landing 39%. Judah landed just 14% of his 30 jabs thrown per round. Scoring thru 10: 97-91 Cotto 3x)
3/3/07 KO 11 OKTAY URKAL (German based Urkal took a licking a kept ticking. Cotto landed 54% of his power shots, many to the body of the game Urkal, who landed 45% of his power shots, never hurting Cotto. Overall, Cotto avg’d 49 punches thrown per round and 19 jabs thrown per round. Cotto landed over 58% of his power shots in five of 11 rounds.)
12/2/06 KO 5 CARLOS QUINTANA (made major statement in much anticipated move to welterweight, winning a vacant title vs. Quintana (23-0), who gave hot prospect Joel Julio a boxing lesson six months earlier. Landed 33% of his power shots- featuring a nasty body attack. Avg’d 56 punches per round. Quintana got off 102 in 1st, then averaged just 63 over next 4 rounds (landing just 19%) after feeling Cotto’s power.)
6/10/06 W 12 PAULIE MALIGNAGGI (put major league whuppin’ on game Malignaggi, who was cut from accidental headbutt in 1st round. Cotto then dropped Paulie in 2nd. Overall, Cotto landed 34% of his 50 punches per round and 40% of his power shots. Malignaggi’s face was a swollen mask by fight’s end. Cotto had 203-136 edge in total connects and 169-73 edge in power connects. Scoring: 116-112 2x & 115-112.)
3/4/06 KO 8 GIANLUCA BRANCO (returned to fight on home turf for first time since near disasterous results vs. Corley13 mos. earlier. All Cotto, as he landed 32% of his 60 punches per round vs. defensive-minded Branco, who landed just 8 punches per round (14%). Branco landed 14 punches per round in his 12-round decision loss to Gatti on 1/24/04.)
9/24/05 KO 7 RICARDO TORRES (major-league shootout vs. then-undefeated (28-0) and unknown Torres, who was down in 1st round, then rallied to drop and badly hurt Cotto in 2nd. Torres landed 40 of 105 punches in the 2nd, including 39 of 89 power shots, the most landed (in both categories) against Cotto in 15 of his fights tracked by CompuBox. Cotto poured it on in rounds 3-6, not before Torres again badly hurt Cotto in the 5th. Cotto outlanded Torres 125-47 in those rounds. The fight was gone from Torres after the 5th, as Cotto closed the show by outlanding Torres 50-10 in rounds 6 & 7. Torres was down 4x. Cotto landed 49% of his power shots, Torres 36% of his non-jabs.)
6/11/05 KO 9 MOHAMAD ABDULLAEV (broke down Abdullaev, who defeated Cotto at 2000 Olympics. Reverted back to jab as a weapon after near-disasterous results slugging away vs. Corley. Avg’d 40 jabs per round, used ring and went to Abdullaev’s body. Abdullaev had his moments, outlanding Cotto in power shots in rounds 3 (13-7); 6 (7-6) & 8 (16-12). Abdullaev’s right eye began to swell in 6th and by 9th he’d had enough with Cotto ahead 79-73; 79-73 & 78-74 on cards.
(Cotto v. Abdullaev con’t) Cotto avg’d 75 punches per round, while the countering Abdullaev avg’d just 51 per round. Cotto just 72-64 edge power connects-but he hit much harder. Cotto had 60-13 edge in jabs connects.)
2/26/05 KO 5 DEMARCUS CORLEY (came out 17 lbs heavier than at weighin and looking for ko in front of Puerto Rican faithful. Abandoning jab, he landed 28 of 73 in 1st (27 of 68 power shots) and 24 of 62 (22 of 52 power shots) in 2nd before nearly landing on queer street in 3rd, as Corley connected with right hook less than 1 minute into round. Cotto held on, then rallied to drop Corley, who took a knee in 5th to avoid further punishment. Corley was also down in 1st. Homer referee Ismael Quinonez proceeded to stop fight-probably preventing Cotto from scoring clean ko in 5th. Cotto outlanded Corley 117-73. Corley, not known for his pop, landed 42% of his power shots which should convince Cotto to abandon the ko at any cost strategy he employed at home and revert back to the jab to set up the power shots. He threw just 23 jabs in 5 rounds vs. Corley and still managed to land 41% overall and 42% of his power shots.)
12/11/04 KO 6 RANDALL BAILEY (dismantled KO-artist Bailey, 28-4, 27 ko’s, who landed on Cotto’s chin in 1st round-with no effect. Outlanded Bailey 104-14!! Fought at a measured pace, landing 33% of his 52 punches per round. Closed show in 6th round by landing 24 of 38 power shots (63%), many to body of Bailey. In last 2 fights, outlanded opponents 225-57.)
9/11/04 KO 6 KELSON PINTO (took apart previously undefeated Pinto (20-0, 18 ko’s), who had defeated Cotto twice in amateurs. Never let the 6’ Pinto into fight, landing 29 of 63 total punches (46%), including 20 of 41 power shots (49%) in first round. Continued assault in 2nd, outlanding Pinto 22-6. Outlanded Pinto 21-7 in 4th and 19-8 in 5th before end came in 6th. Overall, landed 121 of 280 total punches (43%) to just 43 of 404 (11%) for Pinto. Cotto also landed 93 of 203 (46%) power shots.)
5/8/04 W 12 LOVEMORE NDOU (late sub Ndou, who went 12 hard rounds with Sharmba Mitchell in February, one tough customer. Ndou subbed for Juan Valenzuela. Ndou made Cotto fight. Cotto avg’d 63 punchces per round. Iron-chinned Ndou had his moments, winning 3 of last 4 rounds on 1 judges card. Overall Cotto went 198 of 755 (26%) to 137 of 600 (23%) for Ndou. Scoring: 117-111; 115-113; 116-112.).
2/28/04 VICTORIANO SOSA (blew away durable Sosa, who lost lop-sided decision to Mayweather in April of ’03 and came thisclose to ko’ing Paul Spadafora. Outlanded Sosa 85-20. Sosa landed just 10% of his total punches.)
2/1/03 KO 11 CESAR BAZAN (the absorbent former lightweight champ made Cotto fight- and he responded by averaging 69 punches per round, landing 371 total punches in less than 11 rounds.)
